What does a Factory Farm look like?
Drawing Henri Benefield In factory farms there are a lot of animals being mistreated and the conditions are horrible. In the photo, it shows a pig pictured inside of a cage. The conditions in factory farms are very bad, most of the time they are covered in manure, stink, and are very dark allowing very little sunlight in. The pig in the picture has dirt all over it and is in a very dark room to give a setting of how factory farms are like. In factory farms it is very unlikely for the animals to see sunlight in the days that they are living. There are some chances that they get but more than not they are in artificial light and not very bright conditions. To show more of the conditions the cage that the pig is pictured in is very rusty to show that there isn't that much upkeep and maintenance going into factory farms as there should be. The life of a female pig in a factory farm is quite sad. It lives most of its life in a small confined space called a gestation chamber where it gives many births in its lifetime. As soon as the mother is ready to give birth, it is placed in even worse conditions, the farrowing crate. As soon as the baby pigs are born, they are taken away from their mother. If it is a boy then it is sent to be raised for meat and if it is a girl it is sent to the gestation crates when it will go through many pregnancies. After each pregnancy, the female pig goes back into the crates and goes through as many pregnancies as possible until it is eventually slaughtered for meat (Lingel). Factory farms have been known to have very harsh conditions for the animals. Animals grow up to never know what freedom is like. Their whole life they are scared of humans and are constantly stressed. They will never know what a natural life is like.
